Participation in High School Athletics Has Long-lasting Benefits

High school athletic programs have been studied for more than a century. Early studies focused on how athletics helped foster a collective identity and generated pride for participants and community members. These studies evolved to clarify how participation brought about improvements in physical health, stress management and academic benchmarks. Today, there are numerous studies that focus on all types of participation benefits, but what sometimes goes unappreciated is the impact that high school athletics has on students after they graduate.

Participating in high school athletics has long-lasting, definitive benefits, especially when athletic leaders create an environment that challenges and rewards the growth mindset. When participants are supported in this way, they develop lifelong habits that transcend high school.

Three of the most important participation takeaways that students continue to practice after graduation are: 1) a stronger sense of self-confidence in building relationships with others and having an expanded capacity for empathy; 2) developing a better understanding of self and in so doing understanding how their actions affect others; and 3) building foundations for lifelong fitness habits. read more at nfhs.org

High School Closes Stadium, Track to Public – Athletic Business

A Texas high school has its students’ safety in mind as it announced this week that the football stadium and track will be closed to the public on school days.

Midland High School announced the change this week after the school board approved the move. The track will still be open to the public on weekends or when the stadium is not in use.

“In today’s day and age, we cannot allow public access to the campus while students are present,” wrote Blake Feldt, the school’s executive director of athletics in an email to the school district that was obtained by the Midland Reporter-Telegram. “To continue to allow people to come and go as they please while the facility is being used by children would be irresponsible of us as a district.”

The incident happened Saturday in Kannapolis, North Carolina. During one of the matches, Barry Jones rushed down from the bleachers and shoved a Southeast Guilford High School wrestler to the ground. According to a report from WSOC-TV, the Southeast Guilford wrestler was facing off against Jones’ son. It’s unclear what prompted Jones to rush the mat.

Video of the aftermath, which you can see here, shows dozens of people on the mat, some of whom are restrained from retaliating against Jones. Jones is tackled to the mat and held down.

The wrestler was not hurt in the incident, and Jones was charged with disorderly conduct and simple assault. He was held on a $1,000 bond.

2019 Sports Law Year-In-Review

Legal Issues in Athletics Administration

Over the course of the year, lawsuits were filed, court cases were decided, legislation was enacted, administrative agency rulings were released, state athletic association decisions were issued, and other legal pronouncements were handed down impacting school sports programs. In each instance, the principles established illustrate the importance for school administrators and athletics personnel of understanding contemporary issues in sports law and proactively applying that knowledge to policy development and day-to-day management of their athletics programs.

Constitutional Law: Due Process & Vaping

In September 2019, in L.H. v. Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation, a Dearborn, Indiana, Superior Court judge ruled that the district did not violate the due process rights of a football player caught with a vape pen in May in violation of the student-athlete code of conduct regarding possession of alcohol, tobacco or drugs by suspending him for five of the team’s nine games scheduled for the 2019 season. The complaint filed in the suit claimed that the policy allows for suspension from athletic participation only when a student tests positive for the use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs (not for mere possession) and that even with a positive test, the maximum penalty is 50 percent of a season’s games. The complaint asserted that the player, L.H., did not test positive for nicotine in a drug test administered in June and that, even if he had, the fivegame suspension was greater than the 50 percent allowed for such a violation (5/9 = 55.5%). read more at nfhs.org

Process for Sharing School Facilities with the Community

0

For many years, Columbine, Chatfield and Dakota Ridge High Schools shared the same youth development program. During the youth football season, a team was composed of young men from all three high schools.

Since Colorado is a choice-enrollment state for incoming freshmen, Dakota Ridge High School felt this could have an impact on its enrollment. With a little guidance and leadership from high school athletic administrators and coaches, the Dakota Ridge Youth Sports Association was created in 2003.

In addition to the concern about freshmen enrollment, there was another district-wide factor. In the 1990s, middle school athletics were eliminated due to significant budget cuts. As a result, the natural district feeder program no longer existed, and the sports association was now seen as an alternative. read more at nfhs.org
