Volleyball Coach Quits Over Pressure From Parents – Athletic Business

0

A high school volleyball coach in Iowa is stepping down over pressure and criticism from parents.

Tori Braby has a winning record at Mount Ayr High School but said the politics of being a coach has affected her quality of life.

“I’ve had a parent send me about 22 emails in one day upset that her student wasn’t playing,” Braby told the local CBS affiliate, adding that parents have complained to her at local stores and waited outside restaurants where she was dining.

Braby has led her team to three conference championships and in seven years won more games than the previous 10 years combined.

The NFHS Voice: Leadership of Athletic Directors Continues at 50th National Conference

In the history of high school sports, the early 1970s will always be remembered first and foremost for the passage of Title IX in 1972 – legislation that sparked the growth of girls sports in the United States.

A year earlier, however, the National Federation of State High School Associations made a decision that has impacted education-based athletics in an equally significant manner.

Recognizing the future growth of the high school athletic directors profession, the NFHS started the National Conference of High School Directors of Athletics in February 1971. A total of 355 athletics directors attended the first conference in St. Louis, followed by another 257 at the December 1971 gathering in Columbus, Ohio.

The national conference for high school athletic directors has been held annually in December since that time, and on Friday, December 13, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, more than 2,100 athletic administrators will convene for the 50th National Athletic Directors Conference (NADC), which continues through Tuesday, December 17. read more at nfhs.org

Suggested Topics to Cover in Mentoring of Coaches

0

The process of mentoring new, inexperienced coaches is not a simple act of assigning an experienced individual to answer questions and provide occasional advice. To be most effective, there has be a planned program with specific topics of the aspects and elements of coaching that should be covered by the mentors. This effort should not be done in an off-the-cuff, laissez-faire manner. An athletic administrator must take a hands-on approach and provide the mentors with training and a curriculum.

The following represent several universal aspects that mentors should cover with their mentees. read more at nfhs.org

The NFHS Voice: Addressing Coaches Education, Parent Behavior Begins at Youth Sports Level

0

The NFHS hosted a first-ever meeting of about 25 leaders of National Governing Bodies and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee last week to discuss common concerns and opportunities to align and work together.

Within the youth areas of these organizations, the issues are familiar ones to high school leaders – decline in participation, parent behavior, coaches education and minimizing the injury risk. Clearly, however, reaching parents with appropriate educational messages on sportsmanship, injury risk and the values of participation is a top priority for leaders at all levels – youth, middle school and high school sports.

Recently, the NFHS formed a Middle School Committee in an effort to build interest in education-based sports at that level and to share the proper messages with parents before their kids reach high school. However, as we learned last week, middle school may even be too late! read more at nfhs.org

High school soccer players handed 1-year ban for shoving ref – Coach and Athletic Director

Martha’s Vineyard and Norwell high schools were facing off in a first-round playoff match. With less than 30 second left in regulation, and the score tied at zero, the head official called a hand ball inside the box, awarding Norwell a penalty kick. The kick was converted, and Norwell escaped with a 1-0 victory.

According to WHDH Boston, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) representatives met with both schools’ athletic directors Tuesday. The organization informed them that league rules mandate a one-year suspension for anyone who assaults an official. According to the MIAA rulebook, the ban applies to participation in all sports.

WHDH reports that the league is considering additional disciplinary action. read more at coachad.com

Study: Sport specialization comes with increased risk for injury – Coach and Athletic Director

A new study finds that kids who specialize in a chosen sport tend to engage in higher levels of vigorous exercise than their peers and may be more likely to sustain injuries, such as stress fractures, tendinitis and ACL tears.

“It’s wonderful for a child to love a sport and to want to engage in it, but we must keep in mind the number of hours spent playing,” said study author Alison Field, a professor of epidemiology and pediatrics at Brown University. “They add up pretty quickly.”

She hopes the study’s conclusions will help coaches, parents and doctors guide young athletes toward less intense, less specialized training.

This study, published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine on Sept. 18, helps to explain some of the dangers of sports specialization. Athletes who focus on one particular sport tend to practice more frequently and intensely compared to athletes who do not. read more at coachad.com
