Facility Snapshots: Lessons learned from athletic projects around the country – Coach and Athletic Director

0

A roundup of 6 athletic projects around the country, and the lessons learned by those in charge.

In small communities like Kutztown, Pennsylvania, the high school stadium is the epicenter of social gatherings. So, when it came to spending money on major upgrades, it was an easy decision.

What followed was a $3.4 million investment in the high school athletic facilities. That included a new grass field, an eight-lane track and bleachers to accommodate 1,500 fans. Flicker said nearly 20 percent of Kutztown students participate in track and field, so the district felt it was appropriate to target the outdated track. Expanding to eight lanes also would allow the school to host meets.

When it came to the field, the school favored natural grass over turf. read more at coachad.com

Entire HS Coaching Staff Fired for Drinking Incident – Athletic Business

0

Parents and members of the Revere (Ohio) High School community gathered this week at a school board meeting to learn more about an incident that led to the dismissal of all nine members of the school’s football coaching staff.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the coaches — two of whom are school staff — admitted to drinking alcohol during an offseason football camp at a university campus. The drinking constituted a violation of school and state codes of conduct.

The incident took place earlier this month on the campus of Heidelberg University, where coaches consumed alcohol on the lower level of the dormitory where students were staying for the night. No students were involved. University officials reported the incident to the high school the following day. read more at athleticbusiness.com

County Launches HS Substance Abuse Training Program – Athletic Business

0

County officials in New York State announced a new program this week to provide public school coaches and athletic trainers with training tools to combat substance abuse among high school student-athletes.

The East Hampton Star reports that Suffolk County officials announced the program after piloting it in three districts last year. In that time, 60 coaches received training on how to identify student-athletes who may be using liquid nicotine, marijuana, opioids or alcohol.

Coaches in the program receive a 75-minute course on the specific warning signs associated with drug and alcohol abuse, as well as strategies for intervening. Developed by Stony Brook University’s Center for Prevention and Outreach, the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), civic advocates, Families In Support of Treatment as well as coaches, athletic directors and athletic trainers, the program will be funded from the County’s operating budget and will be made available to interested districts ahead of the next sports season. read more at athleticbusiness.com

This means scheduling games and buses, depositing gate receipts, interviewing prospective coaches, verifying eligibility reports and countless other details. There’s never enough time to do everything, and the days are long.

It has been this way for decades, but new duties are added every year. The position has become more complicated, and it involves greater expectations and responsibilities. Beyond the long-standing basics of the position, there are new aspects that are essential for your program to thrive and survive.

These new responsibilities have to be developed, and time must be found to accomplish them. The athletic director’s position is one of evolution, and since change is a constant, things will continue to develop. New aspects and responsibilities will become an integral part of the job whether you’re ready or not. That’s why it’s critical to understand this evolution and prepare. read more at coachad.com
